Data Scientia Platform (hereinafter “Platform”) Organized by Data Scientia (hereinafter “Organizer”)

We wish to inform you about our Project aims and the compliance with the current regulation for data processing. The Platform has been created in order to support a certain number of applications that will be used by different institutions for scientific research purposes. The Platform is managed by Data Scientia Foundation (http://datascientia.disi.unitn.it/). The Data Scientia Foundation is held in accordance with the EU Regulation 2016/679 "General Regulation on the protection of personal data" (from now on "GDPR"), the D.lgs. n. 196/2003 "Code regarding the protection of personal data" and the relative Annex A.4 "Code of ethics and good conduct for the processing of personal data for statistical and scientific purposes" (Provision of the Guarantor No. 2 of the June 16, 2004, Official Journal August 14, 2004, No. 190) sanction the right of every person to the protection of personal data concerning you. Pursuant to the aforementioned legislation, the processing of your personal data will be based on compliance with the principles set forth in art. 5 of the GDPR and, in particular, to those of legality, correctness, transparency, relevance, not excess and in order to guarantee an adequate security of personal data. As a Data Subject, we provide you with the following information regarding the processing of your personal data.

Identification Information: When you register on DataScientia, you establish an account within our system by providing essential details, including your first name, last name, and email address. It's important to note that your email address remains private and is not visible to other users, with the exception of experiment coordinators. These coordinators are internal administrative members responsible for communication with experiment participants when necessary. In the process of conducting experiments, researchers and experiment owners may utilize filters such as nationality, institution, faculty, age, and gender to tailor their audience selection in alignment with the research or experiment's objectives. However, it's crucial to emphasize that none of your personal information is shared with researchers or experiment owners. Your privacy and data security are paramount to us.

While signing up to our platform, we ask you below information which is necessary to create you account in our system:

In the profile management section, users are fruther asked to provide additional personal details which are following:

  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Place of birth
  • Address

Purpose of the Processing

In general, the processing of your personal data is conducted in order to grant you access to the Platform. This Platform is an integral part of the Data Scientia Foundation, whose specific objectives concern the creation of a grass-roots community centered around the development and dissemination of a unitary knowledge-driven understanding of the people’s diversity, as it is represented by the data in the Internet.

The data we gather through our platform is not for mere curiosity; rather, it serves essential purposes integral to the services we offer. We request certain personal and sensitive information from you to ensure the smooth operation of our platform. While some of this data is necessary for administrative functions, others are crucial for various functional aspects such as authentication. A more detailed explanation follows below.

  • Access to the Platform: Certain information is indispensable for creating your profile within our system, including your first name, last name, and email address. Your email serves a dual role as your unique identifier in our system and as a vital means of communication. Rest assured, this information will never be shared with any third party without your explicit consent.
  • Collection of User Information for Research Project Matching: Our citizen science platform is designed to facilitate collaboration between researchers and participants for a wide range of scientific projects. To enhance the user experience and ensure alignment with the specific requirements of certain research projects, we collect certain information from our users, such as: Gender, Nationality, Date of Birth, University, Faculty, Course Year and Profession. This information may be required to match users with research projects that have specific gender-related or nationality-related criteria. For instance, a study exploring Italian cultural practices may seek participants of Italian nationality. Your date of birth allows us to verify your age, which may be a requirement for certain research projects. Researchers may be interested in collaborating with participants from particular universities or students at a particular stage in their academic journey while certain research projects may target participants from specific academic disciplines or faculties. We want to emphasize that your privacy and data security are of utmost importance to us. We will only use this information for the purpose of facilitating your participation in relevant research projects. Your data will be handled in accordance with our privacy policy. By providing this information, you can help us connect you with research projects that align with your interests and characteristics, contributing to the advancement of science and knowledge.
  • Public Portfolio: Our platform offers users the opportunity to create and share their own portfolio, showcasing their contributions to citizen science and various research projects. This portfolio is designed to allow users to highlight their valuable work and collaborations within our community. It's important to note that user portfolios are publicly visible to everyone by default. However, we prioritize your control over your personal information. You have the option to unpublish your portfolio at any time through the 'Manage Profile' section of our platform. When you choose to share your portfolio, the following information will be made publicly visible on your portfoilo page: first name, last name, your profile picture, date of registration, projects you have been involved in, experiments/projects you have conducted and your LinkedIn profile URL (if you are also registered as a researcher).
  • Statistical Analysis: In addition to the core services, we also conduct statistical analysis to generate aggregate data on platform usage. This includes metrics such as the number of experiments conducted, user contributions, and any incentives earned. These statistics are presented to users in the form of quick descriptive summaries on their dashboard. We respect your privacy, and we will never share this information publicly without your explicit consent. Your ability to manage and control the visibility of your portfolio is a fundamental aspect of our commitment to your data privacy.
In addition to the Organizer, the recipients of your personal data will be the owners of the Apps enabled on your profile. Please remind that for each enabled App you will be provided with a Privacy statement from the App’s Owner which will be the Controller of the data you will share within the App. In case you enable the App of a non-EU Controller, your data might be transferred to this Controller upon your permission. No personal data is transmitted to third parties that are outside the mentioned recipients. In addition to the Organizer, the recipients of your sensitive data will be the authorized administration staff, with the sole purpose of making payments following your participation in the studies proposed in the community.
Data Retention Period

Your personal data will be kept until the project's goals are reached. However, it is possible to delete your personal data from our system upon request.

Nature of Data Provision
The provision of your data for the aforementioned research purposes is indispensable in order to access the Platform and participate in the Research Projects carried out within the Platform. Failure to provide data will make it impossible to participate in the Projects.
How can I delete my personal data?

You can request deletion of your personal data at any time by sending an email to communitysupport@knowdive.it. When you do this, all of your personal data associated with your account will be permanently deleted. We can remove your personal data from our systems however we cannot remove your data from external projects you’ve joined through our platform. If you have specific concerns, please contact us.

Rights of the Interested Party
As an interested party you have the right to request at any time from the Data Controller the access to your personal data, rectification, integration, cancellation, limitation of the processing that concerns them or to oppose their treatment. For the exercise of the aforementioned rights, you can contact the Data Controller and / or the Data Protection Officer at the mentioned addresses. The Data Controller is the University of Trento, via Calepina n. 14, 38122, Trento, which can be contacted by email: ateneo@unitn.it. The Data Protection Officer can be contacted at rpd@unitn.it.

Aside from the uses listed above, we do not share, sell, rent, or lease any of your specific personal information, including name, phone number, address, and email, with any third parties.

AGE REQUIREMENTS

This platform is intended for use by individuals who are adults and are at least 18 years of age. By accessing or using this website, you affirm that you are of legal age in your country of residence and have the legal capacity to enter into binding agreements. We do not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from individuals under the age of 18. If you are under 18, please do not use this website or provide any personal information to us. For administrative users registered on DataScientia, the platform grants them the ability to send you messages, strictly for administrative purposes and only when email communication becomes absolutely necessary. Rest assured, this system safeguards your email address from public exposure.
